2004 Season
In
partnership with the SunYatSen Garden, the Chan Centre and the Alliance
Française Vancouver, this series showcases international and
local young artists. The Young Artists Series
would like to welcome everyone, specially
the youth to its concerts.
To kick off a new, exciting partnership
of intercultural exchange promoting young and rising musical talents,
the Alliance Française of Vancouver and the Canadian Vocal Performing

Guerrier
David Guerrier, at 18 years of age, has garnered a place as one
of the most outstanding musicians of his generation. He won the
first Young Concert Artists European Auditions held in Paris, and
he then won the 2003 Young Concert Artists International Auditions
in New York.
David Guerrier was also awarded The Saint Vincent College Concert
Series Prize. He will give his first U.S. concerts this season,
including his Washington, DC debut in the Young Concert Artists
Series at the Kennedy Center on February 22, 2004, his New York
debut in the YCA Series at the 92nd Street Y on April 13, 2004,
and a recital and educational residencies at the Washington Center
for the Performing Arts in Olympia.
He is the 2004 winner of the best soloist at the French awards Les
Victoires de la Musique for classical music.

Vincent
Boucher
Vincent Boucher is considered as one of
the most promising Canadian organists of his generation. As a native
of Montreal, he began his studies with harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour
and organist Bernard Legacé. He later continued at the Conservatory
of Music of Quebec in Montreal with Mireille Lagacé. In November
2000, Vincent won the First Prize at the John-Robb Competition of
the Royal Canadian College of Organists, the oldest competition
of its kind in Canada. He has also won the prestigious European
Prize from the Academy of Music of Quebec, which has not been awarded
to an organist for 34 years. Vincent has toured Canada, France,
Austria, and has been heard several times on the air-waves of Radio-Canada.
With the European prize under his belt, he has recently been able
to work with Pierre Pincemaille in Paris on improvisation and composition.
He is currently the joint Casavant organist at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Church in Montreal.

A consistent honour student at
Lord Byng Secondary School and a violin student at Amati String
Studio studying under the direction of Amy Levinson, Michelle
Gao was born in Canton, China. In 2001, Michelle won both Trophy
and Scholarship in the BCRMTA Student Performer's Guild Festival
for Intermediate Strings Classes. Two years later, she returned
winning at the same festival for the Senior class. In November
2003, Michelle received the Gr. 9 Silver medal for RCM violin
examinations as the top mark in BC. At Lord Byng, Michelle has
received the award for top music student in Gr.9, 2002-2003. With
an unprecedented mark of 100% in her school's strings program,
Michelle received top Honours in 2004. First Place winner at the
Kiwanis music festival with her Amati Piano Trio in 2003, Michelle's
trio represented Vancouver in the Provincials placing second overall.
Michelle's other performances have
included theatrical production in Visceral Visions Production
at the CBC Studio in May 2003 'The Malaysia Hotel'.
Over the past year, Michelle has also had the opportunity to study
with Andrew Dawes as she prepares for competitions and auditions.
Upcoming events for Michelle include the ASTA Solo Competition
in November 2004. With the support of her parents and grandparents
Michelle's dedication and love of music continues to grow and
mature through her many successes. |

Margit Juhász was born in Victoria, B.C., Canada, July 9,
1988. She received the Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto,
(ARCT), Piano Performance Diploma, at age fourteen, and was awarded
the Gold Medal for the highest standing nationally in 2002. She
is presently finishing the Associate of the Victoria Conservatory
of Music, (AVCM), Piano Performance Diploma. Since 2001, she has
attended private classes in New York with Dr. A. Fermin, a professor
of piano in the pre-college faculty at the Juilliard School.
She made her premiere public recital at age nine and
her concert debut with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra at age twelve,
as soloist in the "Symphony Splash 2000", performing the
Grieg Piano Concerto to an audience of 40,000 people. In 2003, at
age 14, she appeared at Carnegie Hall, Isaac Stern Auditorium, for
a series of eight performances with the St Luke's Orchestra, David
Loebel conducting. She had performed under the direction of conductors
David Loebel, Harry Newstone, Peter McCoppin, Stephen Brown, Brian
Jackson, Norman Nelson, Norris Berg, and Larry de la Haye. Presently,
she is preparing a new concerto to perform in 2005 for Greater Victoria
Performing Arts Festival. |

Multi-awards
winning pianists individually, Joseph Tong,
George Kamiya,
Michael Cheung,
and Richard Ho
formed the Quatuor Piano under the direction of Jean Lyons. They
recently won first prize with a mark of 92 at the Kiwanis Music
Festival 2004.
Joseph is a grade 11 student at Prince of Wales Secondary
School. He is an ARCT pupil of May Lim at Jean Lyons School of
Music. He is an accompanist of the church choirs and an organist
at his church. He offers his time at senior homes and at concerts
for the Vancouver Recital Society. Joseph received 94% on his
2003 Royal Conservatory of Music grade 10 piano examination, earning
him the highest mark in Vancouver.
George is currently a student of the University of British
Columbia studying and aiming for a career in the sciences. Outside
of school, he explores his passion for music, which began at the
age of four. His journey with the piano has won him numerous prizes
and scholarships in local festivals and allowed him to compete
as a CMC National Finalist in 2001. George received his ARCT diploma
in 2002, studying under Jean Brown at the Jean Lyons School of
Music. When away from the piano, he enjoys playing baseball and
golf.
Michael is currently under the guidance of May Lim at
the Jean Lyons School of Music where he has gained recognition
for his musical talents both locally and internationally. Since
obtaining his ARCT Diploma at the age of 14, Michael has placed
first in his age category at the Canadian Music Competitions,
won the grand prize for the Seattle Young Artists Competition,
and had been chosen overall winner of the Vancouver Women's Musical
Society Piano Scholarship Competition. He has also performed with
the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Seattle. He aspires
to make an appearance at Carnegie Hall one day!
Richard is 14 years old and has been studying at Jean
Lyons School of Music as a pupil of Angela Barbour since the age
of five. Currently at the ARCT level, Richard has won numerous
awards including the Richmond Music Festival Scholarship and the
Grand Prize of the Chinese-Canadian Medical Society Talent Competition,
2003. He place fourth in the 2002 CMC National Finals and more
recently, accumulated the highest mark among all candidates in
the London College LLCM Diploma examination. |
Ian and Caitlin Wood
Piano
12-
year old Ian Wood
was born on September 28, 1991 in Vancouver, B.C. Ian started
the piano at age five and violin at age six. Currently, he
is a piano student of Prof. Lee Kum-Sing at the Vancouver
Academy of Music and a violin student of Mr. Rafail Matyukov.
Ian is the recipient of
many awards and scholarships in many local and national competitions.
In the 2001 Canadian Music National Competition in Quebec,
Ian was the First Prize winner in piano and Second place winner
in Violin. In the same year, he became the youngest winner
in two major Concerto Competitions and performed with the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO).
In June 2001, Ian (at age 9) made his debut at the Orpheum
Theatre, performing the D Minor Piano Concerto by J.S. Bach
with the VSO under the baton of Maestro Bramwell Tovey and
again in November of the same year.
January 2003, Ian performed at Mstislav Rostropovich's private
party as a special guest. After his performance, Maestro Rostropovich
described Ian as, "
extremely talented
one
(Rostropovich) is so glad to have a chance to hear
"
February saw Ian and his sister Caitlin performed J. S. Bach's
Concerto in D minor for two violins with the VSO at the VSO
Fundraising Gala Concert. In March, the two played the same
piece at the Orpheum Theatre. April 2003, Ian made his debut
with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performing Mozart's Piano
Concerto in A major.
In 2004, Ian performed Mozart's Piano Concerto in C major
with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in March and with the
B.C. Chamber Orchestra at the Vancouver Playhouse in May.
10-year old Caitlin Wood was born
on February 14, 1994 in Vancouver, B.C. She began learning
both the piano and violin at age 4. Currently, she is a piano
student of Prof. Lee Kum-Sing at the Vancouver Academy of
Music, and a violin student of Mr. Rafail Matyukov.
Caitlin has participated in many local and national competitions
and is the winner of many awards and scholarships. In the
2001 Canadian Music National competition in Quebec, Caitlin

In February 2003, Caitlin (at age 8) made her debut with the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), performing J. S. Bach's
Concerto in D minor for two violins with her brother Ian.
In March 2003, Caitlin and Ian were invited again to perform
with the VSO at the Orpheum Theatre.
This year in the Vancouver Kiwanis
music Festival, Caitlin is the winner of numerous scholarships
in piano. She is also the recipient of the "Most Outstanding
Performance Award".
