Duration: Full-time 35 hrs/wk up to 16 weeks, May 5, 2008 to August 23, 2008

Rate of pay: $10.50 / hr plus 4% vacation

Language: English essential, French an asset

Weekends required


OBJECTIVES and BENEFITS

  1. Assist the operation of the Port Moody Station Museum- employer benefit: reach the mandate of Heritage Awareness in the community; student benefit: develop skills and abilities, career choice

  2. Display development- employer benefit: have new displays to encourage more visitors to the Museum; student benefit: develop skills in project management and creativity

  3. Special Events- employer benefits: raise profile of the Museum in the community, increase attendance; student benefits: participate as a team member, learn about the community

  4. Productive Work Experience- employer benefit: provide staff to accomplish Museum objectives in an effective manner; student benefit: develop skills, career development/choice and a positive work experience


TASKS

  1. Safety- Ensure security and safety of the Museum, visitors and themselves, measure – zero incidents

  2. Design and prepare temporary displays “The Mills of Port Moody ” and “The barbershop” , measure – display developed on time, on budget and high quality

  3. Maintenance of displays, measure – improvements in labeling, cleaning and creative additions

  4. Special events: assist in planning, organizing and production of openings, measure – team participation in the successful implementation displays for events: Canada Day, The Station Anniversary and the opening of the Mills of Port Moody

  5. Future displays – develop ideas for future displays that promote the mission of the Museum, measure – number and appropriateness of themes

  6. Interpretation - interrupt displays and conduct tours of the museum, network with other local museums, measure – comments in visitor’s log, network connections made

  7. Other varied duties – as a small museum must be able to do what is needed, ie meet visitors expectations – measures varies


CANDIDATE PROFILE: Exhibit Assistant

Field of Study: Education, History, Design or Cultural Management sector, at least completed first year of study

Computer Skills: competent level of MS Access, MS Word, MS Excel.

TASKS & WORKPLAN

  1. Safety- Ensure security and safety of the Museum, visitors and yourself, follow WorkSafe BC requirements, measure – zero incidents

  2. Research the “Mills of Port Moody” – measure, number of sources used, data complied

  3. Add researched information into the Museum’s computer database - measure, number of years completed

  4. Collection Cataloguing – assist in collection management thru the cataloguing of recent artefacts, verification of location, and additional information – measure, number of artefacts researched

  5. Artefact retrieval – assist the Exhibit/Display Committee by sourcing artefacts for displays and returning those from finished displays – measure, successfully handling artefacts

  6. Interpretation - interrupt displays and conduct tours of the museum, measure – comments in visitor’s log

  7. Other varied duties – as a small museum must be able to do what is needed, ie meet visitors expectations on a limited budget – measures varies
