Origins
The Hispanic Community
Centre Society of British Columbia was established in 1989
primarily to teach the Spanish language and to carry out cultural
and social activities ancillary and incidental to that.
Later on a new program was created to help newcomers of
Spanish speaking origin integrate into the community.
This program was called Sister Families
and is still active providing direct assistance and
orientation to any newcomer that needs it.
Working with newcomers
through this program it was found necessary to create an ESL program to help
immigrants learn English.
These programs were run by
volunteers who dedicated a lot of time and effort to
helping people.
Youth
Program
There was yet another need
in the community: to help the Hispanic youth. The Centre
created a youth program for this purpose.
There was a coordinator to
work with the Hispanic youth all year round. This program
run for a few years.
Now the Centre has the
Summer Day Camp for children and youth which is unique in
the way it is run.
A group of youth get
leadership, communication and first aid training and then
they volunteer as camp leaders during the Summer Day Camp.
Hispanic
Community Centre
The Centre has grown a lot
during these fifteen years and now offers a variety of
services such as Legal Clinic, Employment referrals, free
literacy classes, translation and interpretation services
not only to Hispanics but to anyone that needs it.
