1. Yatha ahu (Y 27.13)

YathA ahU vairyO    athA ratush ashAtchit hachA

VanghEush dazdA mananghO    shyaothenanăm anghEush mazdAi

khshathremchA ahurAi A    yim drigubyO dadat vAstArem

Translation: 

Just as one is to choose God, the Lord of life, based on Truth, so is the temporal leader to be chosen based on Righteousness.

These two choices are made through good mind, so the acts of life are done for the Wise One, and the dominion of God is well established, where the chosen person becomes the protector of the oppressed.  

 2. Yanim mano (Introduction to Yasna 28)

 YAnim manO yAnim vachO yAnim shyaothnem ashaonO zarathushtrahe

FerA ameshA spentA gAthAo geurvAin

NemO vE gAthAo ashaonish

Translation: 

Ideal are the thoughts, ideal are the words, ideal are the deeds of the Righteous Zoroaster.

Let the Amesha Spentas, the Beneficent Immortals, present the Gathas. Homage unto you, O Truthful Gathas!

 

 3. Ahmai raeshcha (Y 68.11)

AhmAi raeshcha khvarenascha    ahmAi tanvO drvatAtem    ahmAi tanvO vazdvare     ahmAi tanvO verethrem   

ahmAi ishtim pourush-khvathrŚm    ahmAi AsnŚmchit frazańtîm     ahmAi dareghŚm dareghO-jitim 

 ahmAi vahishtem ahUm ashaonŚm raochanghem vispO-khvAthrem

Translation:

May he (or we) have glory and splendor, may he have bodily health, may he have bodily strength, may he have soundness of body, may he have wishes with full contentment, may he have children with innate wisdom, may he have a long life, may he have the best life as righteous people have—splendid and fully content.

4. Monajat (composed by Bahram Ravari)

KhOdA yA bOzOrgĭ tO rA khOd sezA’st    kE bar har dO gEti farmAnravA’st  

TO dAnAtar az jomlEh  dAnandEgAn    tO rUzĭdEh i jomlEh yE bandEgAn

Na aghl i kasĭ sUy i tO rAhbar    na dAnandEh dAnad zE sErrat khabar

SEpAs az tO dAram, elAham tO’i    hamĭ dastgir O’ panAham tO’i

Translation:

 O God, greatness, is your most deserving emblem,

                                                For it governs both the material and the spiritual realm

 You are the wisest of the wise in the universe,                                  

                                                You are the sole sustainer of all worshippers

 No intellect can ever match that of yours,

                                                No sage can unravel your mysterious lores

 I am grateful to you my Worshipful One,

                                                For you are my guide and protector as one

 You are the protector to the lonely and meek,

                                                So please hold my hand through the path that I seek

Open the floodgates of your blessings and bounty,

                                                Shower me in both realms with pride aplenty

 I have no other besides your mighty presence,

                                                ’Tis only your being that my tired soul yearns

 5. Ahya yasa (Y 28.1)

AhyA yAsA nemanghA    ustAnazastO rafedhrahyA

manyEush mazdA pourvim    speńtahyA ashA vispeńg shyaothanA

vanghEush khratUm manańghO    yâ khshnevishA guEshchA urvAnem

Translation:

In humble adoration, with hands outstretched, I pray to You, O God! First of all, through Your beneficent spirit vouchsafe

 to me all righteousness of action and all wisdom of the Good Mind, so I may bring joy to the Soul of Creation.

6. Ashem vohu (Y 27.14)

Translation:

Righteousness is the best good. It is radiant happiness. Happiness comes to the person to whom righteousness

On account of my humility, do purify me, O Ahura, Lord of Life. Through Your most beneficent spirit, grant me strength,

in return for my prayers, O Mazda, Lord of Wisdom and bestower of good things. 

Through Righteousness, bestow upon me strength and power and on account of my good thoughts grant me supremacy.

To enjoy happiness, Farseeing One, reveal unto me Your priceless gifts. O Ahura, grant me those blessings which flow

through Khshathra, Your spiritual and just power, and through Your Good Mind. O Beneficent Aramaiti, the symbol of love,

peace and faith, grant us insight through truth.

To You, O Mazda, Zoroaster dedicates his own life as a gift along with the excellence of his good thoughts.

He offers his conscious following to Asha, the spirit of truth, by dedicating his whole strength to the best words and deeds.

 8. Ye vao mazda (Y 28.2)

YE vAo mazdA ahurA    pairi-jasAi vohU mananghA

maibyO dAvOi ahvAo    astvataschA hyatchA mananghO

AyaptA ashAt  hachA    yAish rapańtO daidit khvAthrE.

Translation:

Wise God, I approach you through good mind. Grant me through righteousness the blessings of both the material and the

mental states, so that I may lead my companions to happiness.

9. Yenghe Hatam (Y 4.26)   

YEnghE hAtAm A-at yesnE paiti vanghO   

mazdAo ahurO vaEthA ashAt hachA yŚnghAmchA

tAnschA tAoschâ  yazamaidE  

Translation

Indeed Mazda Ahura, the Wise Life-giver, clearly distinguishes all righteous people who serve the living world through their deeds. 

We also venerate all such men and women.

10. Kem Na Mazda (Y 46.7; Y 44.16; Vd. 8.21)  

 

KEm-nA mazdA    mavaitE pAyUm dadAo   

hyat mA dregvAo    didareshatA aEnanghE   

anyEm thwahmAt    AthraschA mananghaschA

Translation:

Who will, O Wise One, give me protection, other than Your Sacred Fire and Your Intellect, when the deceitful

threatens to harm me? O God, it is through the working of those two that righteousness thrives. Do enlighten my inner-self with this doctrine.

Of those who exist, who shall be victorious and shall protect the world through Your Principles? Show me clearly

the life-healing leader, Wise One, so that the inspiration comes to the person whom You wish and to all others, whosoever they may be!

Protect us all around from our foes, O Wise One and Progressive Serenity…

11. Mazdayasno Ahmi (“Fravarti” Y 12.8-9)

MazdayasnO ahmi    mazdayasnO zarathUshtrish    fravarAnE AstUtaschA fravaretaschA AstuyE humatem manO   

AstuyE hUkhtem vachO    AstuyE hvarshtem shyaothanEm    AstuyE daEnAm vanghuim mAzdayasnim

Translation:

I am a Mazda-worshipper, a God-worshipping follower of Zoroaster. I choose for myself to be a worshipper through

my own conviction and appreciation. I appreciate good thoughts, I appreciate good words, and I appreciate good deeds.

 I appreciate the Good Religion of worshipping the Wise One, which overthrows yokes, yet sheaths swords.

It teaches self-reliance and is righteous. Of the religions that have been and shall be, this is to remain the greatest, best,

and the most sublime.

It is divine and Zoroastrian. I attribute all good to the Omniscient God. Such is the appreciation of the

Good Religion of worshipping the Wise One.

12. Yasna 44.4

Tat thwA peresA    eresh-mOi vaochA ahurA 

kasnA deretA    zŚmchA adE nabAoschA

avapastOish    ke apO urvarAoschA

ke vAtAi    dvŚnmaibyaschA yaoget AsU

kasnA vanghEush    mazdA dŚmish mananghO.

Translation:

This I ask You, tell me truly, God! Who holds the earth below? Who keeps the sky from breaking away?

Who creates the waters and the plants? Who lends the wind and clouds speed? Who is the creator of good mind, O Wise One?

13. Yasna 30.2

SraotA geushAish vahishtA    avaEnatA sUchA mananghA

AvarEnAo vichithahyA    narem narEm khvakhyAi tanuye 

parA maze  yAonghO     ahmAi ne sazdyAi baodEńtO paiti.

Translation:

Hear the highest truth with your ears and ponder carefully with an illumined mind. Then, let each one of you choose

between the two paths. Awaken to this doctrine of ours before the great event of choice ushers in.  

14. Tao ahmi (from “Afrinagan i Dahman” stanzas 2-7)

TAo ahmi nmAnE jamyAresh yAo ashaonăm khshnUtaschA ashayascha vyAdaibishcha paiti-zańtayascha us-nU

Translation:

May the Truth-borne blessings, namely, rewards, compensation, and hospitality come into this house,

and may there now come to this community plenty of prosperity, good fortune, a peaceful life,

and the long enduring prominence of this Religion, which is Godly and Zoroastrian.

Now in this house may neither the cattle be tainted, nor Truth, nor the strength of truthful people and the Godly doctrine.

May the good, prosperity-giving Fravashis, the protective guardians, come here, accompanied by their healing virtues,

to spread good things across the earth, throughout the rivers, and across the skies as high as the sun lies, so as to

overthrow misfortunes and advance the riches and fortunes.

May hearkening Sraosha, listening to the divine message, overcome disobedience within this house, and may peace

overcome discord, may generosity overcome greed, may reverence overcome rebellion, and may honesty overcome falsehood.

And so, may the Amesha Spentas, the Beneficent Immortals, receive through Sraosha, the good acts of worship,

praise, reverence, adoration, joyous offerings, and the devotional offerings, until the time of the final harvest.

May the comfort-giving good fortune never forsake this house and promote the comfort-giving riches,

the joy-bringing offspring, with long lasting company of what bestows paradise and good rewards.  

15. Yasna 31.8  

At thwA mEnghi paourvim    mazdA yezim stOi mananghA

vanghEush ptarEm mananghO    hyat thwA hEm chashmaini hEngrabem

haithim ashahyA dŚmim    anghEush ahurem shyaothanaEshU

Translation:

When I beheld You in my mind’s eye as the very first and last, O Wise One, then I perceived You as the progenitor and source of the good mind and the veritable creator of truth. Thus, I envisioned you as the judge of all actions in life.

16. Yasna 44.5

Tat thwA peresA    eresh-mOi vaochA ahurA 

ke hvApAo    raochAoschA dAt temAoschA

ke hvApAo    khvafnemchA dAt zaEmAchA 

ke yA  ushAo    arEm-pithwAkhshapAchA

yAo manaothrish    chazdOńghvańtem arethahyA

Translation:

This I ask You, tell me truly, God! Who is the master artisan that created light and darkness? Who is the master

artisan that fashioned sleep and awakening? Who has fashioned dawn, noon, and, night to call the wise person

to fulfill the daily duties properly?

17. Hamazur Bim

HamAzUr bĭm. HamAzUr i hamA ashU bĭm. HamAzUr i vish kerfeh bĭm; ham kerfeh yE kerfeh-kArAn bĭm.

DUr aZ vanAh o’ vanAh- kArAn bĭm; ham kerfeh yE basteh-kOshtĭyAn o’ nikAn o’ vAhAn i haft-keshvar-zamĭn bĭm, ...

Translation:

May we be joined in strength. May we stand united through Righteousness. May we join hands in doing more meritorious deeds.

May we unite with benevolent people. May we be far from wrong and wrong-doers. May we be joined hand-in-hand

with all the faithful and all the good people of the world…

18. Dir Zivim

 Dĭr zĭvĭm, dOrOst zĭvĭm, shAd zĭvĭm.  TA zĭvĭm, bE kAmeh zĭvĭm. GEtimAn bAd bE kAmeh yE tan, mainUyEmAn bAd bE kAmeh yE ravAn

Translation:

May we live long, may we live right, and may we live happily. While we are still alive, may we live fulfilled. May we have physical  satisfaction in the material world, and may our souls experience satisfaction in the spiritual world.

Dear Feri,
 
I have just finished listening to your Namaj CD.  It is truly outstanding. 
 
I love the way it starts with birdsong! 
 
The prayers were beautifully recited by the Mobeds.  The instrumental music gave me goose bumps, it was so haunting, so moving.  The singing by the Gatha Group was lovely, especially the singing (and the music!) for Y31.8 by Ms. Azar, which was exquisite indeed.  The voices of Valerie McNichol, and Michael Robinson giving the English translations were clear and sounded good, although I would have prefered them to refer to Zarathushtra by that name instead of Zoroaster.  And the actual English translations by Dr. Makki struck a good balance between bringing these ancient prayers into the 21st century, without sacrificing their ancient style and beauty and were well done (even though I might have translated a bit differently here and there). 
 
I had hoped to hear in this CD that wonderful singing of a verse of the Gathas, composed by that Zarathushti musician from France (who has an aunt in Australia) -- can't remember his name.  It starts with a thumping sound, intended to represent the heartbeat of humanity.  It was sung at the World Z Congress in Houston in 2000.   I was disappointed that it was not on the CD.  
 
But even so, all in all, this is an outstanding production.  This is what we have needed for so long -- the joy of music in our religion. 
 
I feel so happy to see that such creative efforts are succeeding.  Thank you for bringing music and beauty back into the Gathas and our prayers. I hope you do many more such CDs.
 
If it is not too much trouble, please convey my sincere respect and admiration to everyone involved in this endeavor -- the mobeds, the singers, the musicians, the composer(s), the speakers, the translator and the artist and technicians who made the CD itself.    I will take care of thanking the birds for their birdsong! (just kidding!).
