"Novel Approaches to Engineering / Construction Projects"
|
The 61st PM Professional Day will be held on Wednesday September 26, 2012 at
the Holiday Inn, Metrotown. Register now with Helsa Hevani, PMP at
[email protected]
. Do not reply to this email; instead, send a new message to
Helsa Hevani.
Our agenda for the day will include these presentations and workshop
sessions:
-
KINSMEN CARE LODGE: A SENIORS CARE FACILITY PROJECT
Matti Saar, PMP. An overview of how senior's housing is typically developed
in BC, and the team approach taken to manage this turn-key project. The facility was
delivered on a cost-effective budget ahead of schedule.
.
-
SAFETY BY DESIGN: THE PM'S ACCOUNTABILITY - Alady Sukumar, MBA, Ph.D., S.E., P.Eng, PMP
-
SMART METER DEPLOYMENT Mike Dewing, PMP. The strategy
for deploying approximately 1.8 million Smart Meters across British Columbia in
only 18 months. The challenges included scheduling, staffing, inventory, and
logistics. The presentation will touch on the public's perception of the
deployment efforts.
-
COPING WITH SCOPE GROWTH David Dowdell, PhD, P.Eng.
The scope of a design project often grows as work progresses and the
details become apparent. The PM must know how to draw the line between
what is reasonably foreseen and what constitutes a change, so that the effort
remains within budget limits, or must work with the client to adapt the budget
to reflect the true scope of the design.
-
UBC ROAD TO CARBON NEUTRALITY: AN UPDATE Alberto Cayuela,
P.Eng., PMP, LEED AP. UBC is breaking new ground with its integrated
operational and academic sustainability strategy, and aggressive GHG emission
reduction targets. Flagship projects, including the Centre for Interactive Research
on Sustainability (CIRS), cement UBC's position as a leader in sustainability and
pave the way to carbon neutrality
-
EARLY CONTRACTOR INVOLVEMENT: ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS
INTEGRATED PROJECT DELIVERY Bryan McConachy, P.Eng., PMP.
The design-bid-build process, which has long been the standard for delivering
capital projects, is being replaced by such alternative methods as design/build,
contractor involvement, and integrated project delivery. A look at the history of project
delivery, current experience in BC, and a forecast of future methods.

Seminar participants can claim seven PDUs for the day. In addition to the time
they spend as
participants, Presenters and Workshop Leaders can claim a PDU for each hour
spent
performing those roles, including preparation time
This is a full-day seminar. If you register it is understood that you plan
to attend for the entire day. If you leave early it is a discourtesy to your
fellow professionals. Another PMP from the wait-list has been denied the
opportunity to attend, and the presenters at the end of the day are
slighted.

Registration Policy - Fine Print
|
As an incentive - and reward - for service, the November 25, 2009 General
Meeting of the Society approved a priority system which gives preferential
access to seminar registration. Presenters, workshop leaders, management
team volunteers, and retired officers will be given first priority for
available seats for a period of time following their service. The remaining
seats will be assigned through a lottery as has been done in the past.
The list of individuals eligible for first priority seating, along with the
rules for assigning available seats, can be downloaded at
http://www.vcn.bc.ca/pmprof/A-List.PDF
For the September 26, 2012 seminar, once seats have been assigned to the
presenters, the management team for the day, and the priority applicants, a
lottery shall be used to determine which of the remaining applications for
registration are chosen for acceptance, in accordance with the rules set out
below.
Registration for a seminar does not open until a registration notice, such
as this one, is broadcast. There is no provision for advance registration.
Only those applications received after the time of broadcast will be
considered.
Each application received by the Registration Manager prior to midnight
September 10, 2012 will be assigned to either an A-list pool or a regular
pool. Each application will be given a random priority number within the
pool. Available seats will first be awarded to those in the A-list pool in
priority sequence. The remaining available seats will be awarded to those in
the regular pool in priority sequence. Once the registration limit is
reached, the remaining applications will be placed on a wait list in
priority sequence, first A-list then regular. Each application received
after midnight September 10, 2012 will be assigned the next sequential regular
priority number in the order it is received, whether or not the applicant is
on the A-list.
Each application will be acknowledged and each acceptance will be confirmed
by email.
Each application received will be considered a firm offer to register and to
pay the full fee. Cancellations will be accepted up to midnight, Wednesday
September 19, 2012. Those on the waitlist will be accepted in priority order
if spaces become available prior to the cancellation deadline. A waitlist
candidate will be notified of acceptance by email. A waitlist candidate must
cancel to be removed from the list.
The Society will issue an email notice of acceptance to the address provided
in the registration application, but is not responsible for ensuring that
any registrant has received the notification of acceptance.
Any registrant who does not show is expected to pay the full seminar fee.
Accepted registrants who fail to pay the full seminar fee will be prohibited
from applying for registration at future events until the payment is
received.
Payment by cheque is preferred. Cash is accepted; please try to bring exact
change. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby. No credit cards or Interac
(debit cards) are accepted.
