The Nov 19 Professional Development Seminar examines the importance of
establishing and maintaining effective relationships among the parties
associated with a project. It provides the opportunity to learn how to manage
and build relationships among the players, including team members, users,
vendors and suppliers, and external stakeholders
Our agenda for the day will include these presentations and workshop
sessions:
-
WHERE THE PMBOK ENDS AND YOU START
Mary Jean Payeur, PMP, BSc, CMC, Prosci - Presentation and Workshop.
A look at the ways in which our own natural talents, and those of our project
teams and stakeholders, differ from what can be taught, and how this impacts
our projects.
Applying the results of Gallup's multi-decade, ongoing study of basic human
nature and strengths to how we view and manage our work relationships.
-
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT AND ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD (EMR) IN CLINICS
ACROSS BRITISH COLUMBIA - Stan Shaw PMP.
Special handling is required to manage risks and ensure successful
implementation of Electronic Medical Record systems in busy physician clinics.
The role of a Relationship Manager was key to achieving a 92% adoption rate
with 5500 physicians across British Columbia, currently the highest in Canada.
-
A CRITICAL LOOK AT TEAM DYNAMICS Sue-Ann Bartecko, PMP.
This session will begin with an informal survey of the seminar particpants on
their
personal experiences of team dynamics and behaviours. The presenter will then
review some teaming and group behaviour theory that might help explain the
experiences of the participants and project managers in general. The session
will
close with a look at some tips and tools project managers can use to promote
healthy team dynamics and behaviours.
-
MANAGING CONTRACTOR RELATIONSHIPS - Peter Duggan PMP.
Relationships with contractors are often characterised by conflict and
difficulties in achieving the objectives of the project. Avoiding these issues
is achieved by attention to both the process used in contracting and the human
relationships between the parties.
-
PLANNING A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Walter Wawruck, PMP.
In this workshop the seminar participants will plan and organize a specific
program of professional development activities aimed at the educational needs of
Vancouver area PMPs.
For more information on the technical program and presenters, contact the
Project Manager for the 71st Professional Development Seminar,

Seminar participants can claim seven PDUs for the day. In addition to the time
they spend as
participants, Presenters and Workshop Leaders can claim a PDU for each hour
spent
performing those roles, including preparation time
This is a full-day seminar. If you register it is understood that you plan
to attend for the entire day. If you leave early it is a discourtesy to your
fellow professionals. Another PMP from the wait-list has been denied the
opportunity to attend, and the presenters at the end of the day are
slighted.

Registration Policy - Fine Print
|
As an incentive - and reward - for service, the November 25, 2009 General
Meeting of the Society approved a priority system which gives preferential
access to seminar registration. Presenters, workshop leaders, management
team volunteers, and retired officers will be given first priority for
available seats for a period of time following their service. The remaining
seats will be assigned through a lottery as has been done in the past.
The list of individuals eligible for first priority seating, along with the
rules for assigning available seats, can be downloaded at
http://www.vcn.bc.ca/pmprof/A-List.PDF
For the November 19, 2014 seminar, once seats have been assigned to the
presenters, the management team for the day, and the priority applicants, a
lottery shall be used to determine which of the remaining applications for
registration are chosen for acceptance, in accordance with the rules set out
below.
Registration for a seminar does not open until a registration notice, such
as this one, is broadcast. There is no provision for advance registration.
Only those applications received after the time of broadcast will be
considered.
Each application received by the Registration Manager prior to midnight
November 5, 2014 will be assigned to either an A-list pool or a regular
pool. Each application will be given a random priority number within the
pool. Available seats will first be awarded to those in the A-list pool in
priority sequence. The remaining available seats will be awarded to those in
the regular pool in priority sequence. Once the registration limit is
reached, the remaining applications will be placed on a wait list in
priority sequence, first A-list then regular. Each application received
after midnight November 5, 2014 will be assigned the next sequential regular
priority number in the order it is received, whether or not the applicant is
on the A-list.
Each application will be acknowledged and each acceptance will be confirmed
by email.
Each application received will be considered a firm offer to register and to
pay the full fee. Cancellations will be accepted up to midnight, Wednesday
November 12, 2014. Those on the waitlist will be accepted in priority order
if spaces become available prior to the cancellation deadline. A waitlist
candidate will be notified of acceptance by email. A waitlist candidate must
cancel to be removed from the list.
The Society will issue an email notice of acceptance to the address provided
in the registration application, but is not responsible for ensuring that
any registrant has received the notification of acceptance.
Any registrant who does not show is expected to pay the full seminar fee.
Accepted registrants who fail to pay the full seminar fee will be prohibited
from applying for registration at future events until the payment is
received.
Payment by cheque is preferred. Cash is accepted; please try to bring exact
change. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby. No credit cards or Interac
(debit cards) are accepted.

Program Planning for 2015 - Opportunities for
Presenters and Workshop Leaders
|
At the November 19 Seminar, a workshop session will be devoted to
planning a
program of professional development events for 2015. As input to the
workshop, we would like to identify in advance a slate of potential
presenters, workshop leaders, and management team volunteers.
Please advise
us of your availability and willingness to serve. Contact the workshop
leader Walter Wawruck, PMP
[email protected]
The Society is based on the principle that we learn from each
other, and each of us has valuable experience to share, or facilitation
and management skills to contribute.
Each PMP is a candidate for any of the roles on a seminar.
Unless a volunteer Project Manager steps forward from the ranks of the local
PMPs, a seminar does not proceed.
In addition to technical presenters, workshop leaders, and the Project
Manager, these are the roles on the management team for each seminar.
Additional volunteers are invited for all. One person
may be asked to do two or more jobs:
-
Technical Program
-
Binder Editing and Co-ordination
-
Facilities and Food
-
Registration and Collection
-
Evaluation Report
