The Vancouver Community Network (VCN) provides Internet access and support to hundreds of non-profit groups and thousands of individual users, largely through the efforts of volunteers serving in User support, Web site, Technical and Training positions. The VCN is working with Volunteer Vancouver, the Vancouver Community College and many other participating agencies around the Lower Mainland to develop an orientation, training and deployment process for technical practicum students and other technical volunteers interested in supporting non-profits in their use of Information and Communications Technologies.
This InVOLveBC project will develop transferable, sustainable practices and resources for bringing together voluntary sector organizations and technical volunteers to enhance their capacity to use the Internet to achieve their respective goals. The Volunteer Orientation and Training Program includes sessions in Public Access and User Support, Community Content and Website Development, and Train the Trainer. Technical Volunteer Web participants will develop a network of technical mentors, resources and online tools to support and sustain these efforts and share their expertise.
