The Vancouver Community Network owns and operates a free, publicly accessible, non-commercial computer utility in the Lower Mainland of B.C. which provides a public space on the internet.
VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
Instructional Assistant
Objective: To assist Internet trainers in delivering basic and intermediate Internet and HTML skills development to non-profit organizations and individuals.
Training/Support to be provided by: Co-ordinator of Volunteer Services, Project Co-ordinators, On-site Instructors
Duties:
Essential Qualifications:
- Attend full and half-day training sessions with internet Trainers
- Assist in checking and setting up computer labs prior to training
- Assist internet Tainers in delivering curriculum to new internet users
- Assist users in following Trainers instructions and practicing skills
- Answer questions about VCN services and community programs
- Communicate with staff and other volunteers regarding problems, training needs and frequently asked questions
Time Commitment Required:
- Exceptional people skills (interpersonal and communication)
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
- Intermediate to advanced internet skills using a variety of browsers and email programs
- Ability to take instruction and determine priorities
- Ability to give help to new users and answer questions about VCN and services, demonstrated through a period of orientation in User Support
- Appreciation for the goals of VCN and its community initiatives
- Additional languages an asset
Location: VCN office, 411 Dunsmuir Street, and computer lab locations as scheduled
- at least 4 months
- full-day (9:00 am - 4:30 pm) and half-day sessions as scheduled, to be rotated with User Support shifts
- additional time to attend orientation, training and meetings and read online information
