What's Involved
VCN is committed to reducing barriers to access for individuals and non-profits and providing a non-commercial community space online. We rely on volunteers to help achieve these goals, and this takes time, skill and dedication on all our parts, so here's what we'll be expecting of you:
  • A commitment to universal public access and community development online
  • Participation in a full-day Basic Orientation and Training session (offered once a week, during regular office hours), and other training to enhance our mutual experience
  • At least 4 hours per week during regular office hours initially, with additional time for online collaboration and meetings with your co-workers.
  • A minimum of three months, and a desire to be a long-term member of our community network
  • Self-motivation and a drive toward contributing and participating in building your Technical Volunteer Network
  • Documentation and record-keeping to ensure continuity, sustainability, and ongoing participatory evaluation
We have rules and requirements, but we also have lots of fun, and here's what you can expect to gain from your involvement:
  • the opportunity to contribute your skills to helping people gain access and participate online
  • the chance to meet and work with others in a challenging non-profit environment while building your hands-on experience
  • a free VCN account -- unlimited access following one month
  • statement of service following 3 months of regular, reliable work and completion of activities records
  • training opportunities to enhance our mutual experience, and that of those we work with
  • transportation re-imbursement where project budgets allow

If you can contribute your time and skills to the Vancouver Community Network:

  1. Submit the volunteer application form.
  2. If selected, you'll be invited to an interview.
Once you've attended an interview and are accepted for placement, you'll attend a full-day Basic Orientation and Training session before digging in to your work. These sessions cover VCN's organizational and community development initiatives, account registration and troubleshooting, supporting non-profits in using Information and Communications technology and how to give and get help. The information covered here is key to anyone's participation in the CommunityNet.

VCN volunteering provides opportunities to contribute to ensuring universal access, community space online and technical volunteer networking to support not-for-profit organizations throughout the lower mainland. It's a challenging, vibrant place to share your experience and gain new ones, and we look forward to hearing from you!

If it turns out that we're not quite the right match for your skills, interests and availability, there are many other organizations in need of technical volunteers. Check out our Community Pages Indices and local Volunteer Center websites for other possible placements.
