The Vancouver Community Network owns and operates a free, publicly accessible, non-commercial computer utility in the Lower Mainland of B.C. which provides a public space on the internet.
VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
Internet Instructor
Objective: To deliver basic Internet skills development to VCN users in regularly scheduled training sessions and at community locations supported by VCN projects and initiatives.
Training/Support to be provided by: Co-ordinator of Volunteer Services, Project Co-ordinators
Duties:
Essential Qualifications:
- Deliver one- to two- hour training sessions on connecting to and using VCN, using email and browsing the world wide web
- Promote and answer questions about VCN services and help users solve problems with their accounts
- Check and set up computer lab and community access terminals prior to training
- Assist users in practicing Internet basics
- Produce evaluation and other tools for ensuring on-going effectiveness of training
- Document and report on frequently asked questions, equipment problems, user training needs
- Cooperate with other trainers, staff and volunteers to support and enhance learning and community participation online
Time Commitment Required:
- Exceptional people skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
- Intermediate to advanced Internet skills
- Experience in teaching or training groups
- Ability to take instruction and determine priorities
- Ability to assist to new users and answer questions about VCN and services, demonstrated through a period of orientation in VCN Volunteer User Support
- Appreciation for the goals of VCN and its community initiatives
- Additional languages an asset
Location: VCN office, 411 Dunsmuir Street and community access sites located throughout the lower mainland
- 4-hour weekly User Support shifts are to be rotated with training sessions
- at least 4 months
- additional time to attend orientation, training and meetings and read online information
