Re: Kyoto Protocol
Dear
Prime Minister Paul Martin - and - Environment Minister Dion,
Congratulations
on Canada’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. I am very concerned
about the possible environmental and social upheavals associated with
climate change. I feel very strongly that Canadians must act as
responsible world citizens to dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas
emissions, and I am distressed by:
•
Reports of the inadequacy of the current voluntary approach and of
limited incentives to ever reach Kyoto
targets;
•
Rumours that large industry’s targets will be drastically weakened; and
•
A recent report ranking Canada 107th out of 146 countries for its
emission reduction efforts.
I
urge you to mark February 16th, the date the Kyoto Protocol becomes
law, with the announcement of measures that cement Canada’s commitment
to this essential step toward a just planet, including:
o
Clear targets and timelines for full compliance by 2012;
o
Use of regulation and incentives rather than voluntary measures; and
o
Mandatory targets for large industry consistent with their share of
emissions.
As
a Canadian and global citizen, I pledge my commitment to energy
conservation in every related decision I make.
