Re:
Nuclear Weapons Treaty Review
Dear
Prime Minister Paul Martin - and - Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew,
We write
as citizens to express our deep concern about the threat posed by the
current world arsenal of 29,000 nuclear weapons. Some 4000 of
those weapons are maintained "on high alert" by the U.S. and Russia,
ready to be launched in minutes upon a computer warning of an incoming
missile with a high risk of error. This places all humanity in grave
danger.
The
Government of Canada must direct the
Canadian Delegation to take a leadership role in working for a positive
outcome to the NPT Review Conference. We urge the Government to
publicly call for:
•
Urgent steps for nuclear weapons to be taken off high alert, (including
an immediate end to policies of launch-on-warning)
•
A start on negotiations on nuclear disarmament and on controls of
materials used to build these weapons.
•
No backtracking on the
progress made at the Review Conferences in 1995 and 2000.
We
encourage all efforts possible toward
the creation of a nuclear weapon-free world.
