Completely new infrastructure via top down planning (a hypothetical example)
As these direct travel corridors will
replace air travel and both the trucking of goods and
fuel. There should be few, if any, curves. 
Urbanate II could provide housing for about 25 million citizens from New York and Detroit.
Urbanate III could provide housing for about 20 million citizens from Mexico City.
Included in this example will be a minimal number of reasons as to why what may be done may be done. This is included to give one a glimpse of what could be involved in rebuilding our infrastructure for a Continental sustainable production and distributions system. Only Iron will be discussed yet after reading this one should be able to extrapolate the scope and methodology described here to the making available of our other resources
As you read on and this is most important do not be distracted by thoughts like “how will all this be paid for?” We are talking about a time in the not too distant future when there is no money, no buying, no selling, no getting paid what can be done will be done by those who see a need for it and have the skills and know how to do what is under consideration.. Also, do not get hung up with details such as without pay not enough workers would be available, will the blue shelled snail be safe during such a mammoth construction project, or which type of train design would be best, or will the voters permit it. Albeit these may be valid considerations, but we are not micro-managing, or protecting, or inventing anything just yet this is hypothetical we are trying to get the BIG PICTURE and I mean BIG this is about replacing a worn out infrastructure and building fine places to live for one of every hundred people on earth. By comparison the great wall of China is a garden path. Ordinary hand tool ways of thinking will not cut it here.
This science based plan has been 75 years in the making now and then it will give you goose bumps and now and then stall your mind with the sheer magnitude of what is being proposed. This is a good and doable plan if you cannot accept this then you likely are not well informed as to just how powerful the computerized machines we have are, and you lack forward vision and the ability to think in comprehensive terms. In which case you had best throw this CD away and study history.
The Iron Urbanate see above # I There is a large iron deposit here. Oil being piped from Alaska will pass close by when going south along the transport corridor. Details of how the Iron is to be extracted, refined, and made into ingots would be made available to environmentalists. Trains with rails three meters apart and cars that hang from pivots will carry raw materials et cetera connecting the major ore deposits and the location where standardized electric or diesel vehicles are to be made. Note centralization of where food crops are grown will be avoided as each Urbanate would be growing its own organic food right where it is to be eaten and thereby reducing fossil fuel usage by about 20% of that being used in 2006.
There will be a few high speed passenger trains traversing the Continent in more or less straight lines highways for passengers only and perhaps canals some of which can be built without trenching will run alongside the trains. Mile zero for these trains will be at the Iron deposit where Iron is mined, refined, and cast at the adjacent facilities. They will also go directly to the Aluminum Urbanate and the Titanium Urbanate and the resort Urbanates. We expect that there will be VERY FEW airplanes flying above our Technate and that with few exceptions they would be flown by our military people. Citizens in a hurry could travel on the high speed trains.
Next the housing sequence people will determine how many people it will take to run everything on a twenty-four hour seven days per week basis. And a new dedicated to that resource Urbanate will be designed and built. The horticulture people will determine how much locally grown (organic of course)food the Urbanate will require and submit designs for growing most of the food fresh right at the Urbanate its self. This Urbanate will house citizens who want to be steel workers and those who want to be support personal for steelworkers. It is doubtful that other types of people would live there on a regular basis. One of the most wonderful features of a Technate is the complete optional mobility of those who are enjoying a carefree usufruct lifestyle in a land of plenty. Come on people we can have an end to poverty and oppression by corporate directed police if we want it!

An end to poverty begins with viable housing for our citizens this must be our
first priority.
I did not consult with anyone or surf the www for the locations of the first, second, and third Urbanates they will likely be other than the ones I have chosen for this example. IMHO: The places within the Technate that have the greatest need for viable housing are Mexico City and New York City so I chose them for this reason. I am simply trying to give an example of what the result of comprehensive top down planning might be.
More than hypothetical
2008 update: Although the rout that the Trans Texas Corridor mega highway project will follow was not chosen with these criteria in mind it does serve to demonstrate that Technate size projects are quite feasible. There are no reasons in the physical realm to prevent them from going ahead.
For an example your attention is called to Arabia where Sheik Mohamed is demonstrating
at Dubai for all to see that mega building projects such as new cities can be
accomplished in jig time. A few reasons why Sheik Mohamed and his engineers are
able to accomplish mega projects in astoundingly little time are.
1) No need to get permission from the elected representatives of a voting public.
2) No need to deal with delay after delay from interference by hoards of special
interest groups from the ancient off continent cultures.
3) No possibility that they will ever be overruled by those who hold the purse
strings. Wait! Do not get distracted by thoughts like that place is dictatorship
et cetera this document is intended to dispel the “using this plan is not
possible” supposition. And open the readers mind to the likelihood that
if North Americans could get it together, amalgamate and switch from financial
accounting to energy accounting and replace special interest group dominated
political rule with a governance of qualified functional people that the
Technate could be operating within the time frame used in this presentation of
the plan.

Another closer to home example of how it is now possible to undertake mega
building projects would be the city of Las Vegas Nevada U. S. of A. Las Vegas
is built in a desert the state of the art methods of dealing with a shortage of
water are , well, wondrous to behold and once again the main thing that makes
it all possible is that the cost in terms of money is not a consideration; the
casinos provide all the cash needed. For the building of our North American Technates
mega projects Energy Accounting will remove the restrictions of not
being able to afford materials and the most skilled -- educated builders.
