To illustrate Mattie's reknown as a guide I have included the paper - "Notes On A Journey Through The Northern Peninsula Of Newfoundland" by H.C. Thomson, appearing in The Geographical Journal, August, 1905; No.2 Vol.XXIV, pp 187 - 198. A photocopy of the paper was sent to me by C.M. Martijn Dec. 1999.

The paper is interesting for several reasons:

• It describes in detail a typical guiding job by Mattie in 1904.
• It shows the esteem in which Mattie was held by J.P. Howley.
• It reveals how Mattie had a lake, Lake Michel, named after him.
• It helps confirm that Mattie's name was Matthieu Michel.
