HSUS ANTI-CAPTIVITY REPORT
The Humane Society of the United States has published a revised
copy of the report "The Case Against Marine Mammals in Captivity",
which offers numerous case studies and a broad range of published,
and peer-reviewed references to support its arguments, and they
are challenging the aquarium industry to provide the same.
Highlights from the report include:
-
The primary justification for the public display of marine
mammals is the educational benefit of these exhibits. However,
marine theme parks and aquaria have never performed an objective
evaluation of the effectiveness of their education programs.
-
Fewer than 5 percent to 10 percent of zoos and aquaria are
involved in substantial conservation programs. The amount spent on
these programs is a mere fraction of the income generated by the
facilities. Simply exhibiting wildlife is not considered
conservation.
-
Dolphinaria and aquaria often present their marine mammal
breeding programs as conservation projects, but few endangered or
threatened species are being bred in captivity and no
reintroduction-to-the-wild research is being conducted by the
facilities, at least for whales and dolphins.
-
Whales and dolphins are still captured for display routinely
around the globe, particularly in the Caribbean, Asia, Russia, and
the south Pacific. Most of these captures are inhumane and result
in numerous deaths.
-
The intent-and hope-of The Humane Society of the United States
and the World Society for the Protection of Animals is that this
report stimulates a complete and balanced dialogue amongst
stakeholders - the industry, the public, and the research
community," said Susan Sherwin, campaigns manager for the World
Society for the Protection of Animals. "It's time to take a good,
hard, honest look at the captive display industry and see it for
what it truly is rather than what we want it to be. Let's start
looking at this from the marine mammals' point of view instead of
our own."
Over 26 whales and dolphins
have died under the "care" of the Aquarium, including 6 baby
whales and dolphins. How many more whales need to suffer and die
before you do something about it?
