A two-year research report by the John Howard Society of Toronto and the Centre for Urban and Community Studies at the University of Toronto provides new insight into the relationship between incarceration and homelessness in Toronto. One of its central findings is that a staggering 800 adults - and likely as many as 1,000 - are released from Ontario's correctional facilities and courts each year onto the streets of Toronto, with little or no discharge planning and no place to live.

Safer Tatooing Pilot Sites Underway at Six Federal Prisons

Safer tatooing sites have been set up inside 6 prisons across Canada as a pilot project by the Correctional Service of Canada. Kim Pate on the CSC Response to the Human Rights Commission Investigation into Discrimination Against Women in Prison in Canada
In January 2004, the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) released a report entitled, Protecting Their Rights, that details discrimination that women face inside Canadian prisons based on sex, race and disability. They made a number of recommendations to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) for changes in the way that they incarcerate women prisoners. In February 2005, the CSC released its response to these recommendations. Stark Raven radio interviewed Kim Pate on this issue. The interview gives an overview of the CSC response, as well as analysis of the implications. Kim Pate is the executive director of the Canadian Assoication of Elizabeth Fry Societies. Elizabeth Fry was part one of the groups to file the initial complaint to the Human rights commission 4 years ago.
