Inspiring Performance Outside the Comfort Zone
Robert Schulz, PMP
Abstract
Robert will lead seminar participants through an informative workshop
examining strategies and techniques for building performance in teams
when the PM has no knowledge of the subject matter. Recently, Robert
was asked to manage a large aerospace product development and certification
program. From an IT and forestry background, this opportunity was sure
to be a challenge to say the least. Robert will present a brief overview of
the program as an introduction to the workshop.
Drawing from real examples and experiences on the program which involved
over 150 stakeholders and no shortage of performance challenges, Robert
has prepared mini-scenarios to illustrate team dynamics and poor performance
situations that existed on the project. The seminar participants will divide
into groups, review a component of the program and discuss strategies and
techniques for building performance within each context. It is anticipated
that this project case study will also be unique to many participants allowing
each to experience and share strategies outside their Comfort Zone.
Each group will report its findings and strategy to the larger group at the
conclusion of the workshop. It is anticipated, that common themes and
techniques will surface based on the workshop analysis that may benefit
participants on their projects.

Planning a Professional Development Program
Walter Wawruck, PMP
Abstract
In this workshop the seminar participants will plan and organize a specific
program of
professional development activities aimed at the educational needs of Vancouver
area PMPs. Break-out groups will recommend topics, knowledgeable presenters,
and workshop leaders, with a focus on the needs of practitioners in the various
fields of practice within our community, such as engineering-construction,
information systems and technology, new-product development, and business
process change.
The workshop outputs will be plans for at least four professional development
seminars to be delivered in 2014. The plan will list specific topics for
presentations and workshops, and will identify the project managers, key team
members, presenters, and workshop leaders by name. If the individuals who will
fill these roles are not yet identified, a person will be named for the
responsibility of recruiting these individuals.

The Psychology of Groups
Peter Duggan, PMP
Abstract
A case can be made that psychology is the fundamental science behind the
management Of people, just as physics underlies engineering. The aim of this
presentation is to introduce a little of the science of psychology and show how
it is fundamental to answering some vexing questions relevant to the art of
project management: Why does some management training not work? Why is decision
making on projects sometimes so dysfunctional? Why are we so poor at risk
management? How do we best motivate teams? What makes for a happy, productive
project?
Biographical Outline
Peter Duggan, PMP has over thirty-five years of experience in project
management, system engineering and management consulting. He has Master's
Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business Leadership. He has been at MDA
in Richmond for the past fifteen years and is currently Mission Program
Director for the design, manufacture and launch of three Synthetic Aperture
Radar satellites, called the Radarsat Constellation Mission. He previously
worked on the Radarsat-2 space program (launched in 2007) and the Cassiope
space program (launched this year).
Prior to working for MDA, Peter Duggan spent a decade as a management
consultant, specialising in developing processes and infrastructure for the
management of projects requiring significant engineering development. The
industries he has worked in include Rolling Stock, Iron and Steel, Space,
Venture Capital, Telecoms, and others. In addition to managing projects, he has
developed and provided management training courses, specialising in project
management and sub-contract management.
As a project manager and management consultant, Peter Duggan has always been
interested in the interaction between the soft skills, the hard skills, the
processes, and the tools of project management, believing that they all
interact to support the part of the project that supplies brilliance,
creativity, vision, and the occasional blunder: the project team members.

Project Management Beyond the Competency Framework
Darlene Hope-Ross, PMP
Abstract
There are multiple examples of Competency Frameworks for Project Management.
There is additional value of these frameworks is for their use in assessing
staff or potential staff for project-related assignments. There are multiple
components in the frameworks; some are specific to technical skills, others for
business knowledge and then the soft skills.
Not all skills need to be at the highest level of competency (Refer to the
Levels used in the presentation by Walter Wawruck from April 2012):
-
Awareness
-
Knowledge
-
Advanced Knowledge
-
Skill
-
Ability
-
Advanced Ability.
In a project team, there will be team members with higher levels of competency
in certain skill areas. It is helpful to have a balanced team and to
acknowledge where they may be gaps in the overall team profile. This is where a
team assessment of the competencies can be helpful in building and supporting
the team, and the project manager is a key to a team-building program.
Biographical Outline
Darlene Hope-Ross, PMP brings over 25 years of experience in project management
in Canada. She is an independent consultant and has recently completed a
series of projects for Fraser Health. The projects have been diverse, both on
time, effort and results.
One project was to take an initiative to open a new Centre / Health Care Clinic
for a specific ethnic / cultural population. The need was to start when the
facility was leased and renovations to start. Ten weeks later, the Centre is
open. Another project was to assist one of the programs (department) to
establish a portfolio view of their related projects. This is where the work on
the Competency Framework was completed.
Darlene and Christopher Pinske delivered a session in April 2012 to the
Society: Lean Project Management. The evaluation results suggested an increased
an awareness of Lean concepts beyond manufacturing, although there were queries
about having experience.
Her career began in systems development. That offered the opportunities to work
in many business sectors and cities in Canada. Darlene and her husband live in
Lower Mainland, but loves to travel to Europe to see her grandchildren. She has
been working in healthcare and strategic planning for nearly 10 years.
