It
is after years of study with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Quebec City
and in Montreal under full fellowship, that Jai Govinda adopted a monastic
lifestyle for five years. During that period he visited many of India's
most sacred sites, and developed a love and fascination for Bharata
Natyam.
He has since studied with some of the masters of the dance style, which
have included Sri U.S. Krishna Rao, Smt. Chandrabhaga Devi, K.J. Govindarajan,
Smt. Jamuna Krishnan, Smt. Jaya Lakshmi Eeshwar and Mamata Nakra. He has
been praised by connoisseurs and critics for his mastery of the dance technique,
its grace, and virtuosity (see reviews).
Jai Govinda has performed extensively across Canada, as well as U.S.A.,
France and India.
Since
1995, he has established his own dance academy
in Vancouver, B.C. and many of his students have graduated according to
the tradition of the dance style Arangetram. He has also given many lectures,
workshops, and demonstrations in schools, colleges, universities, and art
institutions of Canada and India.
In 1991, he was the first Canadian to dance at the International Foreign
Artists Festival in Delhi, India. He was also sent to Delhi along with Team
Canada to perform for the delegation accompanying the visit of Canada's
Prime Minister to India.
Jai has been profiled and interviewed on many radio and television broadcasts
and can be seen in Gilles Carle's Film, Montreal Off, which commemorated
Montreal's 350th anniversary.
Aside
from performing, teaching and lecturing, Jai Govinda is developing his fusion
work with other artists and creators. He has worked with "l'Ecole Nationale
du Cirque", various theatre groups, and national figure skater Ravi
Wallia.
Jai
Govinda is a recipient of various grants and awards from the Ministry of
Cultural Affairs, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Shastri Indo-Canadian
Institute and the BC Arts Council.
Jai
Govinda studied for two years at the Actor's studio in Montreal, and as
well as with the La Salle College fashion institute. He is the artistic
director of Mandala Arts and Culture Society.
