CLASSICAL
DANCE OF INDIA with
Jai
Govinda and Anusha Fernado
The
Jai Govinda Dance Academy was established in Vancouver in 1995. The Academy
offers some of the best and highest standards of training in the various
aspects of the Indian Classical dance style Bharata
Natyam.
The
Pandanalur technique of Bharata Natyam passed on to the students of the
Academy hails from the tradition of the great master Meenakshi Sundaram
Pillai and has been received from Gurus Sri U.S. Krishna Rao, Smt. Chandrabhaga
Devi and Mamata N. Nakra. Later, it was enriched by the musicality of Guru
K.J. Govindarajan, the depth of abhinaya of Smt. Jamuna Krishnan and the
ingeniousness of Smt. Jayalakshmi Eeshwar. It is the beauty and purity of
that rich legacy that is passed on by Jai Govinda and the teachers of the
Academy. The students do not only learn the basic steps of the style, but
also its mythological content and cultural tradition.
After a certain number of years of training, the Academy also offers the
possibility for the students to do their Arangetram or premier dance graduation
performance according to the tradition of the dance style. Many students
have now graduated from the school, and are enjoying successful careers
in dance and teaching.
The Academy is recognized for the quality of its teaching not only in Canada
but also in India as well. The students of the Academy perform regularly
at festivals and various other venues across Canada. From time to time,
the Academy also encourages the visit of teachers from India for special
workshops and intensives.
The Jai Govinda Dance Academy operates under the umbrella of Mandala
Arts and Culture Society of which Jai Govinda
is the Artistic Director. Daily classes of Bharata Natyam are offered
at all levels throughout the year.
