The eight classical Dance styles of India have roots in the written text of the sage Bharata Muni's, Natya Shastra; there of the name of one of it's most cherished dance styles Bharata Natyam. Natyam means acting or dancing, as it is required as a dance artist of the tradition to be both actor and dancer; which is a legacy still followed by 90% of the movies produced in India. BHA-RA-TA is also an acronym for Bhava-emotion, Raga-melody, and Tala-rhythm.

Originally performed in the temple as an offering Bharata Natyam was brought to the stage some 80 years ago, after almost facing extinction. At the time of it’s revival a repertoire was established by the famous Tanjore brothers - all teachers of music and dance - which is still followed by Bharata Natyam dancers, especially on the day of the Arangetram or Ranga Pravesh, both meaning entering the stage.

Bharata Natyam continues to evolve and has not been spared by the winds of change. Still the roots of the style are in its prayer, devotion and a spirit of humility well-reflected as the dancers first touch mother earth in respect before stamping their feet.
