Capital Campaign Operations DonationsCrossroads Hospice Society is a member of "Leave a Legacy" program. You can make a difference in the lives of those who follow by leaving a charitable donation in your will to your favourite charity. Follow this link for more information on the "Leave a Legacy" program http://www.leavealegacy.ca. Every day in British Columbia, people's lives are enriched by the work of not-for-profit organizations in your community, and Crossroads Hospice Society is one of those. We encourage you to think about planned giving as part of your will and estate planning. We can direct you to a financial planner or a trust officer who can help you with your decision. Thank you for thinking of Crossroads Hospice Society. Crossroads Hospice Society receives limited government funding and relies on memberships, donations, memorial bequests, fund raising and community support to continue our programs. A memorial bequest is an appropriate way to show appreciation for the volunteer service that has been provided during the terminal stages and the grieving process after the death of a loved one. Capital CampaignThe building of our Hospice at Inlet Centre in Port Moody is progressing extremely well - due to the warm weather of the past several months, we're actually AHEAD of schedule. The Hospice is set to open on September 1st and to start receiving clients within two weeks after that. Please join us for an Open House on Saturday, September 6th. If you drive by our site, you'll see how quickly things have taken place: while the construction trades are busy framing the roof trusses, our team of 30 volunteer decorators are planning the colour combinations and fabrics that will ensure a true homelike setting in our hospice. Equipment has been ordered, electrical outlets are placed, telecommunications and security plans are in the planning phases. So much to do in such a short time! Currently, the roof is on, inside walls, flooring, electrical, heating and plumbing are all in, and the primary painting is done. Some of the appliances, equipment and furnishings are in, the rest are scheduled for delivery. Our volunteer decorators will be on site in the next few weeks. But what an exciting time for the communities of Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and New Westminster! The first freestanding Hospice in our area will serve 175 clients each year and their respective family and friends, a circle estimated to be over 3000 people per year. This is a wonderful building that we can all be very proud of - it takes a huge team of dedicated volunteers and employees to make this crucial project come together. Our thanks to each and everyone of you -we cannot begin to give you all enough credit! Our capital campaign goal is to raise $2.3 million. We are making steady progress and are more than 3/4's to our goal - another $385,000 or so and we're there! Our communities have proven time and time again that they can rally around a crucial cause - and make it a success. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Inside the Hospice Our Capital Campaign Our dream of building a freestanding hospice is now becoming a reality. The 10-bed Crossroads Hospice is presently under construction as part of the Inlet Centre development at Heritage Mountain Boulevard and Ungless Way, in Port Moody, BC. This non-profit, community-based development is a strong initiative that brings together a number of non-profit organizations to provide a broad range of affordable housing options for the community - seniors' assisted living; single women's affordable living; social assisted townhouse living; plus the Crossroads Hospice which will provide housing to meet the special needs of the terminally ill. Our partners in this project are the Greater Vancouver Housing Corporation, the Burquitlam Lions and The B.C. Women's Housing Coalition, Women in Search of Housing and Shelter. This is an innovative project as it is the first time in Canada that a hospice has been included in a social housing project. It will set the stage for further developments of this type throughout the country. Construction of the hospice is scheduled for completion September 1, 2003 with clients in the hospice about September 15. The Crossroads Hospice at Inlet Centre will have 10 private patient rooms. It will have a great room for relaxing and visiting, a quiet room for those needing some privacy and respite, as well as a fully accessible kitchen so families can prepare home cooked meals for their loved ones. There will also be roof top gardens for relaxation and fresh air. Family and friends are free to come and go as they please and to take part in every aspect of care of their loved one. The hospice will be dedicated to the care of the total person and the entire family. Every consideration has been made to make this final home a warm and welcome one. When Crossroads Hospice Society embarked on the journey to create a free-standing hospice, the heart and focus was always to make it home-like. Consideration of the perspective of the client and their family was given to the shape of the rooms and their contents, the ceilings and features like roof-top gardens. Professional planners were consulted and diagrams were drawn. But anyone who has ever built, knows that drawings do not always equal reality. Enter Lutina Santing, a professional interior designer. Lutina has volunteered to spearhead the monumental task of determining the fine details and translating the dream into reality. Lutina has determined all of our electrical and lighting details, is coordinating decorating and has set the tone for creating a home. Six of the ten client rooms have been sponsored, and we look forward to being given a sneak peek at the work our 30 volunteer decorators are creating. Each suite will feature a bay window, a Hide-a-Bed sofa and two comfortable chairs in addition to a specialty hospital bed and a private bathroom. There will be storage for personal items and places where treasured items like pictures can be displayed. Colour schemes will be tailored to each individual room as determined by the team. The quiet rooms, great room and dining area will also receive special treatment. The kitchen-dining area is still available to be sponsored as are two of the quiet rooms. Terry Wright, our Treasurer, felt that clients needed the confidence and freedom to move throughout the hospice and began inquiries into the options available. He felt that a wireless communication system was the only solution, but was told no such thing was available. He refused to believe this and persisted. The result of his search is the acquisition of a state-of-the-art client call service. This service will provide each client with a bracelet which when activated, will alert the care staff to their whereabouts and summon help immediately. This will give clients the freedom to enjoy all areas of their home. With the construction of the freestanding hospice, Crossroads has entered into an exciting but challenging time. We have embarked on our first-ever major fund-raising drive. An ambitious but attainable goal of $2.3M has been established for the campaign. One of the first gifts to our campaign was a commitment in the amount of $896,000 from the Provincial Government through the BC Housing and Mortgage Corporation's social housing program. This was a significant gesture and demonstrated their belief in the need for this project, as it was one of the few government grants to survive the recent cuts in funding. Many other community leaders have committed their support by making substantial contributions. We are within $400,000 of reaching our goal. Crossroads Hospice Society would like to thank and recognize those organizations and individuals who have supported the dream of a free-standing hospice.
