Chantel Jolly has joined the staff of Crossroads Hospice Society. She will be on the palliative care ward at Eagle Ridge Hospital, incorporating Crossroads first Music Therapy program. Chantel has a Masters degree in music therapy and is currently enrolled in the PhD Music and Healing program at SFU. We are very fortunate to have her and are very excited to be able to provide a service such as this to our clients. Music Therapy can reduce pain and anxiety and increase relaxation and comfort. ProgramsVisiting VolunteersSupport Volunteers Grief Support Education Relaxation Circle Visiting VolunteersVisiting volunteers are persons who are ordinary people, many of whom have experienced a loss and who have completed the intensive training. They visit people where they are, at home or in the hospital. They listen without giving advice, and focus on the person rather than the problem. Hospice volunteers are involved in regular support group meetings. During these sessions they share personal reactions to visiting and support each other in the work we do. Annual retreats keep the volunteers focused and committed and create a sense of community throughout our Society. Support VolunteersDetails coming soon. Grief SupportBereavement Support PackagesWe have compiled a number of excellent articles to develop a series of four support packages which can be mailed throughout the first year of bereavement. Each offers reassurance of the many 'normal' reactions to grief which we may experience and the encouragement to allow ourselves the time and space we need to journey through our grief. Articles include:
Some additional articles we include are those specific to a particular relationship loss (i.e. parent, spouse, child, and friend) and ones which refer to coping with the holiday season. Grief's Journey - A Walking GroupOur weekly walking group is open to bereaved individuals or those grieving the imminent death of a significant person in their life. It is a time to walk and talk, at a relaxed pace, with others who are grieving; to share ideas and support and benefit from some fresh air and exercise. Joining in on the walk are volunteers who are available to provide one on one and group support. To participate in Grief's Journey contact our office for current walking schedules. So that we don't leave anyone behind we ask that interested individuals pre-register. Support and Share Night - For Those Newly BereavedDrop-in meetings held the first Tuesday of every month from 7-9 pm at the Kyle Centre (125 Kyle St. in Port Moody). This is a meeting time for families or individuals who are experiencing the sometimes overwhelming emotions related to grieving a loved one. The first part of the evening will offer some education concerning the process of grief and loss. Each month we will welcome a guest speaker from the community. The second half of the evening will provide an opportunity to share - or just listen - with others who have had a loss similar to your own. Small groups will be facilitated by experienced volunteers - offering support for dealing with grief. Attending the Support and Share Night allows you to experience the warmth and understanding of others who are also struggling with loss. You are welcome to come with a family member or friend as we understand having a familiar hand to hold or shoulder to lean on may ease this first step of reaching out for support. This program is offered to persons of 15 years and over. Pre-registration is not required - people are welcome to just drop-in. Compassionate Grief Support Program - Adult GroupThis is an opportunity to share with others who have also experienced a loss and to explore and express thoughts and feelings of the grieving process. In the safety of a group the bereaved can share and learn from others who are in a similar place. Groups meet once a week for 10 weeks. Topics include:
Our fall schedule is as follows:
The purpose of the Living and Learning through Loss program is to help adolescents develop positive coping skills and behaviours for dealing with the grief associated with the loss of a significant relationship. Participants benefit from gathering with others and sharing their experience(s) with loss in a supportive environment. The group provides a vehicle for counselling and peer support that is both knowledge and experience based. The peer support helps to counteract the tendency for adolescents to isolate themselves from their support systems when they are grieving a loss. As part of the process, group sessions utilize:
The program is designed for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years. It will consist of 8 weekly group meetings of two hours duration. Regarding any of these programs please contact Kristine Gagnon, our Bereavement Services Coordinator at (604) 469-3136 for more information or to make a referral. All bereavement support programs are offered to the community free of charge however Crossroads Hospice Society being a non-profit organization greatly appreciates donations from participants. Funds are used to continue the provision of these important support programs. EducationDetails coming soon. Relaxation GuideDetails coming soon. |
