Homeless people are defined
as people who are literally without shelter and who live "on the street",
sleeping outside in parks, alleys and abandoned buildings, as well
as those relying on emergency shelters for accommodation. Those defined
as "at risk" of homelessness are people who are paying too much of
their income for rent, and/or living in unsafe, inadequate or insecure
housing. If faced with an unexpected expense, they may be unable to
make ends meet. Moving outside may be the only answer.
Often, these households are one step away from
homelessness!
Help the Homeless at the Home Show
|
Greater Vancouver Home Builders'
Association is appealing to the general public and its 350 member
companies to support Lifeline Outreach Society and homelessness
at this year's BC Home & Garden Show, Western Canada's largest
consumer home show, scheduled February
20 - 24, 2002 at BC Stadium, which is expected to attract
more than 70,000 visitors. |
Outhouse
Contest
GVHBA has constructed a recreational cottage for the feature display.
GVHBA's members are encouraged to join the fun by building display
outhouses as the creature comfort associated with cottages for many
years.
Showgoers, for a suggested Toonie donation, will vote for their
favourite privy. All donations will go to Lifeline Outreach Society.
The builder of the most popular outhouse will win bragging rights
and a handsome trophy. A draw held at the conclusion of the show
will award the lucky entrant with a large variety of home-related
prizes. Following the home show, the outhouses will be donated to
Scouts Canada.
