Theatre Under The Stars
Vancouver, British Columbia
Theatre Under the Stars, also known as TUTS, started in
1934 as an outdoor band shell in Stanley Park (see Map)
for summer afternoon concerts of choral or orchestra music. In 1940, a
group of local theatre people formed a "not for profit society"
called Theatre Under the Stars to produce quality musicals during the
summer. Since then, TUTS has been delighting audiences from around the
world with summer musical theatre productions in the pastoral outdoor
setting of historic Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park.
We will present Crazy For You and Footloose for the
2004 season. The gate opens at 7 pm and shows start at 8 pm every night until August 21st.
Crazy For You
All-singing, all-dancing George and Ira Gershwin musical with a
typical goofy 1930's story. Bobby, a stage-struck New York playboy
is sent West to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a run-down theatre.
He meets beautiful Polly, daughter of the owner, and falls in love.
If he forecloses, he loses Polly, so he convinces her to put on a
show that will pay off the debt. Mix-ups, misunderstandings,
disguises and improbable appearances abound, but eventually all is
happily resolved and Polly and Bobby are united.
It's a real culture shock for teenager Ren, when his
family move form big-city Chicago to a small town. He can't quite
believe he's living where rock music and dancing are illegal!
There's a lovely lady with a jealous boyfriend; there's a Bible-thumping minister who is responsible for keeping the town
dance-free, and the Senior prom is just around the corner. Though
his classmates want to do away with the ordinance, only Ren has the
courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban, and
revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople.
