VCN Internet Account Information for Groups

What type of an internet account do I have with a VCN Group Account?

All Community Group users have point-to-point protocol (PPP) accounts. This means you can browse and use the Internet with popular programs such as Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, Eudora, and Outlook Express.

What is the non-profit group web site address and e-mail address?

You will automatically be given a sub domain web page (www.vcn.bc.ca/yourgroup). You will be able to edit and update this page as frequently as you like. The non-profit group web site address is on "www.vcn.bc.ca/GroupLoginID/", and an e-mail address is "[email protected]".

What if we want our own Domain name? i.e. www.yourgroup.bc.ca

If you want your own domain name (www.yourgroup.bc.ca) register with a domain name registrar (.org, .net) at rates they charge. VCN will host the domain name. For more information: http://www.vcn.bc.ca/groups/domain.htm

How much space do I get for my web site?

Depending on the size of your web page, a reasonable amount can be stored, for example, 5 MB.

How do I make my computer connect to the Internet?

If you have Windows 95/98, go to http://www.vcn.bc.ca/help/helppages/ppp.html

If you have Windows 3.1, go to http://www.vcn.bc.ca/help/helppages/win31.html

If you have DOS, go to http://www.vcn.bc.ca/help/helppages/win31help.html

If you have a Mac, go to http://www.vcn.bc.ca/help/helppages/setupmac.html

If you don't have these help pages on paper, come to our office and we will provide you with the paper forms of those pages.

Why can't I get into the Internet with my group ID and password?

When you signed up for a VCN login ID, you chose an ID with the specifications that "a login id must be between 3 and 8 characters long. The first character must be a letter but the rest may be either letters or numbers. No UPPER CASE letters or punctuation is allowed." So please make sure the keyboard is not on with Caps Lock and don't confuse with l (lower alphabet of L) and 1 (number).

When you signed up for your password, you chose a password with the specifications that “a password must be between 6 and 8 characters long. It must have at least one letter and one number”. Remember passwords are CASE SENSITIVE, so if you enter your password in UPPER CASE letters you must also enter UPPER CASE letters at login time.

We forgot our group password!!!

If you forget your current password...

1. If you still remember your original password and your keyword, send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

*Subject : Password Reset Request
*Your group name
*Your group VCN login ID
*The keyword for the password
*The original password
and give our system administrators one week to reset your password. (The person submitting this request must be the same person who originally registered for VCN Internet service for their group, or is the person currently responsible for VCN-related activities.)

2. If you can't remember your original password or your keyword and there's no online access, send a fax (257-3808) on your letter head with your signature and:

*Subject : Password Reset Request
*Your group name
*Your group VCN login ID
How long will it take for my group ID to be activated?

You can look up your name and user ID. To see if your account has been activated, log on to the CommunityNet as "guest" and choose "Search" then "User Search" to find your group name and ID.

If you don't see your group name, then your account is still being processed.

If you find your name and user ID online with VAL next to it, your account is active! You can now log on to the CommunityNet with your ID and password.
(If it says QUE next to the ID: The ID is on the system list, will be activated overnight, and changed to VAL the next day. If it says nothing: the ID is not validated yet and should be validated by us.)

Do we have to pay a membership fee?

A CommunityNet user is a user who uses the system; simple as that. Anyone can become a CommunityNet user for free. A member is someone/group who has paid a membership fee in order to have a vote at CommunityNet's annual general meetings and in order to help fund the CommunityNet's ongoing costs.

You don't have to be a member to be a user and you don't have to be a user to be a member, but people are encouraged to become both! By becoming a member you're telling the community that you feel the CommunityNet is an important service to support.

To become a member, please check out the VCN website

Simply fill out the online application form and send a paper copy with your signature.
